一九四三年生，本名中浩正，中央大学法学部毕业后一边从事广告工作一边创作。一九八○年以〈刺客死于格拉那达〉获得第十九届ALL读物推理小说新人奖，一九八七年以《卡迪斯红星》获得第九十六届直木奖、第四十届日本推理作家协会奖与第五届日本冒险小说大奖。一九九七年辞去广告公司职务，专职写作。曾任日本推理作家协会理事长，作品风格惊险刺激、节奏紧凑，类型遍及心理悬疑、冒险、间谍与时代小说，著作甚丰。极度热爱西班牙、吉他与佛朗明哥舞，常将这些元素写入书中，被喻为日本最擅长描写西班牙的作家。
